Field Blocks & Steals Lead Hoelck to MAAC Weekly Award

Hoelck had eight field blocks and six steals last weekend

April 22, 2008

Edison, NJ - Senior Billy Hoelck (San Diego, CA/University of San Diego HS) has been named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Defensive Player of the Week, as announced by the league office.

A three-time MAAC Offensive Player of the Week this season, Hoelck amplified her play on the other end of the pool this past week. Against Siena, she had two steals and three field blocks which aided the Seahawks to a 10-11 win and locked up the third seed in the MAAC Tournament. If that were not enough, Hoelck went on to block a staggering five shots and grabbed four steals in the Seahawks' final win of the regular season against St. Francis (NY) 10-7.

Hoelck did not struggle offensively either. She tallied 13 goals and three assists in the weekend with five goals coming against Siena. Hoelck also helped the Green & White gain the offensive advantage by drawing eight ejections and two 5M ejections.

This is the fourth time that the Seahawks have earned defensive accolades from the conference and the fourth weekly MAAC award for Hoelck this season. In week one, senior Amber McMichael used her skill to top all defenders for her first award of the year. Wagner then brought to the pool the top two defenders in the league for back-to-back awards in week five and six with the defensive efforts of senior Lindsey Rodgers (Anaheim Hills, CA/Fullerton JC) and junior Alexandra Tomlinson (Telford, PA/Souderton).

The Green & White now have their focus set on the Iona Gaels as the two teams will square off in the first game of the MAAC Tournament on Saturday, April 26 at 1:00 PM. All MAAC Tournament games will take place on the campus of Marist College in Poughkeepsie, NY.
