Player Profile

Position:
Head Coach - 13th season

Head Coach Glen Payne is now in his 13th season as the head coach of the Seahawk softball team. Last year, in a 6-2 victory over Lafayette at the Rebel Games in Kissimmee, Florida on March 16, Payne surpassed the 300-win plateau and established a fitting benchmark in his influential collegiate coaching career. Entering the 2008 season with 331 career wins to his credit, Payne continues to establish the Seahawks softball program as a force in the NEC after leading the 2007 Seahawks to the NEC Championship Game for the second time in three years. Last year's campaign also marks the third consecutive season the program went for 30 or more victories having won 34 games in 2007.

Now a perennial power in the NEC, Payne has improved the Seahawks conference win total in the each of the past four seasons. In the process the team has qualified for the past four league tournaments posting a 54-24 (.692) record in the NEC during the four year span. In 2005, the team also finished runner up in the NEC Tournament.

Payne has continuously employed a geographical approach to recruiting harvesting recruits from across the country ranging from California, Nevada, Texas, Arizona and Illinois in addition to the Northeast Region. The program's recruiting efforts have produced two NEC Rookie of the Year Award winners from Wooster High School in Nevada (Katie Stevens-2005, Andrea Lazzari-2006) in addition to three-time First Team All-Conference Selection, Morgan Miller (Las Vegas, NV / Silverado), now an assistant coach for the Seahawks.

Payne, a veteran of the athletic department, was promoted to Wagner College's first full-time softball coaching position in the summer of 2001. He is also the proprietor of Staten Island's famous softball complex, which houses five well-groomed softball and baseball fields, including lights and a practice hitting area. In April of 2005 he was recognized by the Staten Island CYO organization for his community service efforts.

The Staten Island native, has a history of coaching winning teams. At C.W. Post, Payne won nearly 100 games, as he led the Lady Pioneers to a 23-10 mark and an ECAC Division II South Championship in 1986. He has also coached the very successful Staten Island Saints from 1973-85 and from 1991-95. Payne also had stints at Moore Catholic and St. Peter's High Schools on the Island.

Currently Payne is serving in his 24th year as New York City Commissioner of the Amateur Softball Association (ASA), where registration has risen dramatically over the past few years. Payne is on the National Modified Pitch Rules, National Playing Rule, and NCAA Division I Regional Advisory Committees.
