March 15, 2008

Final Stats

Staten Island, NY - The Wagner College women's lacrosse team got off to a solid start, battling highly-skilled Drexel on even terms for the first 11 minutes of the game, before the Dragons uncorked eight consecutive goals to close the half en route to an 18-4 victory.

With the win, Drexel, whose only blemish this season is a one-goal loss to 6th-ranked Pennsylvania, improved its record to 7-1 while the Seahawks fell to 0-4.

Junior midfielder Cara Gonzalez (Syracuse, NY/ Westhill), the Seahawks' leading scorer on the season with seven assists on four goals and three assists, paced Wagner offensively with two goals while sophomore midfielder Teri Noll (Jordan, NY/ Jordan-Elbridge Central) and sophomore attack Janine Bright (Commack, NY/ Commack) added one goal apiece.

Jessica Bill led Drexel with four goals and Katie Lawson added three for the Dragons, who out-shot Wagner 35-13 and led in ground balls 35-25. Sophomore goalie Alex Johnston (Manlius, NY/ Fayettevillle-Manlius) had 13 saves in net for the Seahawks.

After Drexel jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead, Wagner answered with a pair of goals by Noll and Gonzalez, the latter off an assist by junior midfielder Kelly Blundin (Plymouth Meeting, PA/ Plymouth Meeting), to tie the game at 2-2. Bill then countered with 19:02 left in the first half to key the eight-goal splurge that closed the half.

Leading 10-2 at intermission, the Dragons scored the first two goals of the second half to build the lead to 12-2 before Bright found the net for Wagner to cut the deficit to 12-3 at the 21:35 mark of the second half. Gonzalez tallied Wagner's final goal with 14:47 left to play.

Wagner is next in action on March 17, when the Seahawks travel to North Carolina to meet Davidson in a 4:30 pm contest. The Seahawks then return home to host Saint Francis (PA) on March 20, in a game that marks Wagner's 2008 Northeast Conference opener. Game time for the Wagner-Saint Francis (PA) game is set for 3:30 pm.
