Women's Lacrosse Drops 14-3 Decision to Columbia



Cara Gonzalez had a hand in two of Wagner's three goals, recording one goal and assisting on another.

New York, NY -- The Wagner College women's lacrosse team dropped a 14-3 decision at Columbia this afternoon on Robert K. Kraft Field at Lawrence A. Wien Stadium.

With the loss, the Seahawks fell to 0-3 on the season while the Lions improved to 2-1.

The Seahawks' Cara Gonzalez (Syracuse, NY/ Westhill) scored with 7:51 left in the first half to draw Wagner team within a goal, 3-2, prompting a timeout called by Columbia head coach Kerri Whitaker. The Lions, who had not scored in the eight minutes prior to the timeout, responded by scoring four times in the final 6:40 of the half, and outscored Wagner 11-1 in the final 37 minutes of the contest.

Columbia held a 7-2 lead at halftime, behind Holly Glynn, who had four goals in the opening 30 minutes, and finished with five.

In the second half, the Lions scored the first five goals of the half to complete a 9-0 run over 26 minutes of play spanning both halves. Brittany Shannon had two goals in 58 seconds to complete the run and give the Lions a 12-2 advantage.

For Wagner, sophomore Alex Johnston (Manlius, NY/ Fayetteville-Manlius) made 15 saves. In addition to her goal, Gonzalez had an assist, while sophomore midfielder Alyssa Prima (Medfiord Lakes, NJ/ Shawnee) collected three ground balls. In addition to Gonzalez' goal, sophomore midfielder Krista Malayter (Cheshire. CT// Cheshire) and sophomore attack Janine Bright (Commack, NY/ Commack) also tallied goal for the Seahawks.

Defensively, Emma Mintz recorded five saves in goal and had five ground balls for Columbia. Wagner is next in action on March 15 at Noon when the Seahawks host Drexel.
