Seahawks Clipped By First-Place Quinnipiac, 65-47

Head Coach Gela Mikalauskas and the Seahawks need a win this Monday night and they're playoff bound

March 1, 2008

Box Score

Staten Island, NY - The Wagner College women's basketball team dropped a Northeast Conference matchup with first-place Quinnipiac University (23-4, 15-2 NEC) this afternoon at the Spiro Sports Center, 65-47. The Seahawks move to 7-21, 5-12 NEC but now only need a win this Monday night at home to clinch a playoff spot in the NEC tournament after Monmouth defeated Mount St. Mary's today, 70-66.

As for the action today on Staten Island the Bobcats used a late first-half surge - a 14-4 run - to pull in front of the Seahawks 33-21 at the intermission.

In the second half, however, Wagner would edge closer.

At the 12-minute mark they cut the deficit to five after back-to-back three-point field goals by freshman guard Stephanie McBride (Mechanicville, NY/Catholic Central).

Unfortunately for the Seahawks, Quinnipiac and junior point guard Erin Kerner wouldn't let the margin get any closer after that.

The Bobcats' floor general helped extend back their lead to 14 - 53-39 - with 5:30 remaining capping the run with six points including a three and an assist as the visiting Connecticut school would leave the Green & White's chances of obtaining an NEC playoff berth for Monday night when they host the Knights of Fairleigh Dickinson University in the final home game of the regular season.

Offensively today the Seahawks were paced once again by their senior guard Chelsey Bunyer (Shannon, IL/Eastland) who finished the contest with 14 points on 6 for 15 shooting including two of three from behind the arc.

McBride contributed with 11 points on 3 of 6 shooting from three-point range while senior center Ali Ridge (Barrington, IL/Fremd) had eight points.

Bobcat forward Nicole Duperron was the game's high scorer depositing 17 to go along with 12 rebounds. Kerner and fellow backcourt-mate Mandy Pennewell combined for 25 points on the afternoon.

The Seahawks are back in action this Monday night against Fairleigh Dickinson for all the marbles. Game time is slated for 7 p.m. at the Spiro Sports Center.
