March 22, 2008

Final Stats

Staten Island, NY - The Wagner College men's lacrosse team displayed crisp execution in building a 5-3 lead before Mount St. Mary's scored three straight goals in the final 2:46 of the first half to take a 6-5 halftime lead en route to an 11-6 MAAC victory over the Seahawks.

With the victory, the Mountaineers, who have lost to four nationally-ranked opponents, improved to 1-6 on the season, 1-1 in the MAAC while the Seahawks fell to 0-7.

Statistically, the game was closer than the final score would suggest as Wagner out-shot the Mount 37-36 and won 12-21 face-offs while the Mountaineers held a slim 23-19 edge in ground balls.

Wagner played efficient and effective lacrosse early as five different Seahawks found the net in the opening half. Junior midfielder Brian Poissant (Manlius, NY/ Fayetteville-Malius) tallied an unassisted goal 43 seconds into the game and sophomore midfielder Chris Ridente (Crandford, NJ/ Cranford) made it 2-0 with another unassisted goal with 11:06 left in the opening half. Also scoring first half goals for Wagner were freshman midfielder Will Macumber (Manorville, NY/ Eastport South Manor), junior attack Jeff Policicchio (Novi. MI/ Novi) and sophomore midfielder Sean Travis (Calverton, NY/ Riverhead), this last goal giving Wagner a 5-3 lead.

The game was tied at 5-5 when Joe Derwent scored with six seconds left in the first half, one of his game-high four goals, which gave the Mount the 6-5 halftime lead. Buoyed by this tally, the Mountaineers' momentum continued in the second half with five unanswered goals to which made it an 8-0 scoring run bridging the two halves. This eight-goal outburst gave the Mountaineers a commanding 11-5 lead. Senior midfielder Mike Hess (Potomac. MD/ The Heights School) broke the Wagner scoring drought with an unassisted goal on a blast from 15 yards out with 5:04 left to play.

Wagner is next in action on Sat., March 29 when the Seahawks travel to VMI for a 1:00 pm face-off.
