Lehigh Runs Past Wagner in Men's Lacrosse

Bethlehem, PA - The Wagner College men's lacrosse team battled Lehigh on even terms for one quarter, trailing by one goal after the opening stanza, before the Mountain Hawks pulled away in the second quarter en route to a 15-6 victory.

Three of the first shots the Seahawks took found the mark as Wagner trailed by just a 4-3 after the opening quarter. After three quarters of play, Lehigh built the lead to 13-4 before, much like in the first quarter, Wagner played the Mountain Hawks to s standstill over the final 15 minutes as the teams each scored two goals in the fourth.

Junior attack Jeff Policicchio (Novi, MI/ Novi) notched two goals and dished out two assists for the Seahawks who fell to 0-5 on the season. Jonathan Stumpf paced the Mountain Hawks with four goals as Lehigh improved to 3-3 on the season.

Other goal scorers for Wagner included freshman attack Will Macumbern (Manorville, NY/ Eastport South Manor), junior midfielder Joe Kross (Colonie, NY/ Colonie Central), junior attack Evan Shull (Port Jefferson Station, NY/ Comsewogue) and junior attack Michael Schaeffer (Weston. CT/ Weston). In addition to Pollicchio's pair of assists, junior midfielder Brian Possiant (Manlius, NY/Fayetteville-Manlius) added two assists while Macumber was credited with one assist.

Junior Brandon Waszak (Fredrick, MD/Linganore) and sophomore Matthew McVie (Westbury, NY/L.I. Lutheran) split time in goal with Waszak playing the first half before giving way to McVie in the second half and the two goalies combined for 11 saves.

Lehigh out-shot Wagner 45-29 and led by a slim 12-11 margin in faceoffs but the aggressive Seahawks held a 36-35 edge in ground balls. Lehigh was 3-6 of extra-man opportunities (EMO) while Wagner was successful on 1-5.

The Seahawks are next in action on March 18 when they travel to Louisville, KY to meet Bellarmine University for a 3:30 pm faceoff.
