Wagner Men's Lacrosse Drops Season Opener at Quinnipiac 14-4

Hamden, CT - The Wagner College men's lacrosse team dropped its 2008 season opener 14-4 at Quinnipiac despite two goals from freshman midfielder Will Macumber (Manorville, NY/ East Southport Manor).

The game marked the head coaching debut for Jason Rife, who took over the reigns of the Seahawk program last July.

The Bobcats jumped out to a 3-0 lead after one quarter and led 4-0 before Macumber netted an unassisted goal with 7:23 remaining in the opening half. Quinnipiac would tack on another goal with one second remaining in the half to take a 5-1 lead into the locker room at halftime.

Quinnipiac opened the second half with three consecutive goals to build an 8-1 lead after three quarters. At the outset of the fourth quarter, Wagner struck for a pair of unanswered goals to cut the deficit to 8-3. Junior attack Jeff Policicchio (Novi, MI/ Movi) tallied the first of the two goals off an assist from sophomore midfielder Sean Travis (Calverton, NY/ Riverhead) at the 13:47 mark of the quarter. Junior midfielder Brian Poissant (Manlis, NY/ Fayetteville-Manlius) then tallied an unassisted goal with 11:11 left to play.

Quinnipiac responded with six consecutive goals before Macumber notched his second goal of the contest off a Travis assist with 2:56 left in the game.

Garrett Kerr led Quinnipiac with four goals while A.J. Alessi added three goals. The Bobcats held a 41-12 edge in shots and led in ground balls 45-24, while winning 16-22 face-offs. Seahawk junior goalkeeper Brandon Waszak (Fredrick, MD/ Linganore) recorded 14 saves.

Wagner is next in action on Feb. 24 when the Seahawks host Robert Morris in their home opener. Face-off is set for Noon.
