WAGNER FOOTBALL BONE MARROW PROGRAM A SUCCESS!

Lindsay Hashmall, a member of the Wagner women's lacrosse team and Seahawk football player Neil Barton were among the more than 200 volunteers.

April 14, 2008

Staten Island, NY - On Saturday April 12, the Wagner College football team supported the National Marrow Donor Program and, in the process, reached its goal of having 200 volunteers as a total of 201 people donated samples for this worthy cause.

The Wagner College Football program, led by veteran head coach Walt Hameline, thanks the many students, employees, friends, families, and those in the general public who volunteered their time towards the worthy cause.

Each volunteer's sample, which was attained by a simple cheek swab, is now entered into the National Donor Bank to determine if a match can be found with a cancer patient seeking a bone marrow transplant. If a match is found, the volunteer will be further tested to see if he or she is, indeed, a match.

"We at Wagner College Football are ecstatic with the support shown by the Wagner College community and from those in the general public who turned out for this worthy endeavor."
Walt Hameline, Wagner College Athletic Director/Head Football Coach

On any given day, more than 6,000 men, women and children are searching the National Marrow Donor Program (NMDP) Registry for a life-saving donor. These patients have leukemia, lymphoma and other life-threatening diseases that can be treated by a bone marrow or cord blood transplant. For many of these patients, a transplant may be the best and only hope of a cure.
