May 4, 2008 Moon Township, PA -. The women's 4x800 program record setting second place time along with a number of top performances helped the women's track and field team to place fourth after one day of competition of the Northeast Conference (NEC) Championships. The relay team ran an impressive 9:19.01, over 10 seconds faster than the previous Wagner record of 9:29.53 set in 2001. Junior Alaina Alfano (East Hanover, NJ/Hanover Park) joined in the fun with 1.60m high jump that was good for a tie with Long Island's Heather Patton for second place. Alfano also qualified for the finals in the 100m hurdles with a 15:56 performance and in the long jump where she had the third best jump of the day with a 5.59m leap. Senior Meaghan Robbins (Waymart, PA/Western Wayne) took to the 10,000m run with great strides to bring in eighth place at 40:11.40. California native Brecken Drager (Loomis, CA/Del Oro) put her peddle to the metal in the 1500m as she brought in the top time at 4:58.52 to qualify for the finals. But that preliminary win did not come easy as she had teammate Samantha Snukis (St. Clair, PA/Nativity BVM) right on her heals with her second place finish of 4:58.57 in the event. Snukis also qualified for the finals in the 800m with a time of 2:17.73. The Ford sisters enjoyed a stellar day in the one lap variety as Jocelyn Ford (Neptune, NJ/Red Bank Catholic) qualified for the finals in the 400m with a 58.55 run while Jessica Ford (Neptune NJ/Red Bank Catholic) enjoyed the extra challenge of the 400m hurdles with her 1:03.79 qualifying time. The men also brought in a bounty of great performances in day one that have put them in a tie for seventh place with St. Francis (NY). Junior Allen Koehler (Okeana, OH/William Henry Harrison) had the same success as Robbins in the 10,000m run as he claimed eight place with a time of 34:04.57 while the 4x800m relay team grabbed fifth place, clocking in at 7:55.28 Freshman Coleman Edmond (Kingston, NY/Harmony Prep MI) used his great speed to qualify for both the 100m and 200m finals with times of 10.97 and 21.63 in each respective event. He was joined by senior Daniel Mercorelli's (North Haledon, NJ/De Paul Catholic) 6.57m leap in the long jump that ranked among the conference's top jumps. Both the men and the women will close out the NEC Championships on Sunday, May 4th. For more information on the NEC Championships, visit the NEC website here. |
